Adobe is excited to announce the new release of technical communication products – Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe RoboHelp, and Adobe Technical Communication Suite.

These industry-leading tools enable organizations to create, manage, and deliver technical content to global audiences. They are used by a variety of content professionals across all industries – technical communicators, information architects, help authors, knowledgebase experts, content strategists, instructional designers, policy and procedures specialists, and eLearning professionals – to efficiently and effectively manage the end-to-end digital content lifecycle.

'Today, customers expect an unprecedented level of information from the brands they use. Speedy and convenient access to contextually relevant information can mean the difference between winning over loyal customers or losing them to competitors. The trend towards anytime, anywhere access to services has spilled over into all stages of customer engagement, from early product research to long after purchase,' said Amit Dayal, Vice President & General Manager, Digital Learning, Publishing and Printing Business at Adobe. 'And, customers expect this information to be easily available across new channels like chatbots, voice-activated assistants, and other IOT devices. So, today's technical communicators need to rapidly adapt to this change. Information needs to be authored in even smaller chunks called ‘microcontent' to make it ready for chatbots and other such new delivery media. Writing content for emerging technologies like chatbots requires robust tools. The latest release of Adobe technical communication products makes it even easier for content professionals to get the right information to customers as technologies and channels change and expand.'

With the power-packed latest release of FrameMaker, the market-leading software for authoring and publishing technical content, authors can create intelligent content for long, complex documents even more productively. Authoring in XML or DITA* is more powerful with a modern, easy-to-use workspace. Creating rich, immersive experiences is super-easy using online videos and unmatched image handling. Being able to collaborate seamlessly using online review completes the content workflow. Also, authors can easily work with leading Content Management Systems (CMSs). Faster publishing for a range of devices from a single source as WYSIWYG PDF, Responsive HTML5, EPUB, mobile app, and more makes the solution even more comprehensive.

The latest release of RoboHelp truly makes it the next-generation software for creating and delivering exceptional help, policy, and knowledgebase content for the self-service world. Built for both Windows and Mac, authors can use it to create microcontent to fuel chatbots and author media-rich experiences using HTML5 and CSS3. Collaboration is super easy using seamless web-based review capabilities. Using the solution, writers can serve their customers across all touchpoints by publishing content as Frameless Responsive HTML5, PDF, mobile app, and much more – even personalizing those experiences using Dynamic Content Filters.

Adobe Technical Communication Suite includes the latest versions of five industry-leading tools that transform your technical, eLearning, and business content into exceptional experiences – namely Adobe FrameMaker, Adobe RoboHelp, Adobe Captivate, Adobe Presenter, and Adobe Acrobat. While FrameMaker and RoboHelp help create and deliver technical content, Captivate facilitates the creation of responsive eLearning content, and Presenter helps create dynamic presentations to enable on-demand learning. And, with Acrobat, users can collaborate in real time using shared PDF reviews**.

Rounding up the release is the latest update of XML Documentation for Adobe Experience Manager, an enterprise-class component content management system (CCMS) built on top of the market-leading content management system, Adobe Experience Manager.

Courts and other regulatory agencies typically require firms which eFile to provide a specific version of PDF—most often PDF 1.4, the Acrobat 5 format.

Other times, you may need to change the version of a PDF you have to ensure compatibility with a client or colleague using an older version of Adobe Acrobat.

In this article, I'll cover the following:

  • How to check the version of a PDF document
  • How to change the PDF version

I'll also cover some other related topics about changing PDF version. Read on to learn more.

This option is available in both Acrobat Standard and Professional.

  1. Choose Document—> Reduce File Size
  1. Choose the PDF compatibility required
  2. Click OK

What 'Reduce File Size' actually does is a bit of a mystery. Documents containing color images generally show the most reduction in file size.

Typical legal documents such as scanned black and white documents or simple text-only documents generated from word processing will show little difference in file size. In fact, they may grow slightly.

Saving to a Previous PDF Version using the PDF Optimizer

The PDF Optimizer is a feature of Acrobat Professional only. Using the PDF Optimizer you can:

  • Change PDF version compatibility

  • Selectively compress images to reduce the size of scanned images

  • Unembed fonts Etcher for windows.

  • Flatten Form fields

  • Remove bookmarks

  • Remove an embedded search index

  • Discard metadata

You can select and carry out multiple operations or simply change the version.

Additional Discussion

Acrobat cannot make every PDF readable by an earlier version, especially those that contain embedded multimedia objects. If this is the case, use the PDF Optimizer to remove embedded media.

As a general practice, I don't recommend saving to Acrobat 5 unless required by a regulatory office or court.

Since older, full versions of Acrobat can co-exist on system with the latest Adobe Reader, 'Open' compatibility isn't much of an issue. Reader is free, and that's a compelling reason to install it.
